Custom fishing line manufacturing follows seven steps: agree the spec, test a free sample spool, get a written quote, produce the line in-house, batch-test it, package it under your label, and ship it DDP to your door. At BulkSpool a private-label run starts from 100 pieces per SKU, the sample spool ships free from US stock, and every step from fiber to spool happens on one factory floor.
This guide walks through each step from the buyer's side: what you need to decide, what the factory needs from you, and what you should expect back. It is written for tackle brands launching their own line, shops adding a house brand, and rig builders who want a line made to their spec rather than picked from a catalogue.
Step 1: Spec the line for your market
A custom line starts with the water and the fish, not with a catalogue entry. Tell the factory where your customers fish, what they target and what price point you sell at, and the spec follows from there.
The choices that define a custom braided fishing line are construction (X4 to X16 strands), weave density (economy, mainstream or high grade), coating (standard PU or high-density nano coating), diameter and pound test, and color — from the color library or matched at quote. For leaders there is 100% PVDF fluorocarbon, and for backing and value lines nylon monofilament in three grades. Across the three categories the range runs from 3 to 1,000 lb and 0.02 to 5.0 mm.
If you are unsure, start from what sells in your store today and the complaints you hear about it. A good factory turns that into a spec; it should not just send you a price list.
Step 2: Test a free sample spool
Before you commit to a run, fish the line. BulkSpool ships a free 150 m Pro Grade X8 sample spool from US stock. Put it on a reel, cut it, tie your knots, and test it against the line you sell now. The sample is how you check feel, color, casting and knot strength — the things a spec sheet cannot show.
Step 3: Get a written quote against your spec
Once the spec is clear, the quote is written against it: category, diameter, length, volume per SKU and packaging route. A written quote matters because it fixes what you are buying. Payment is by PayPal for smaller amounts, card payment by secure link, or T/T bank transfer; there are no credit terms.
Step 4: Production on one floor, from fiber to spool
"Made, not sourced" is the question to ask any supplier. At BulkSpool, UHMWPE fiber spinning, braiding, dyeing, coating and spooling all happen in-house, on our own floor in Dongyang, Zhejiang — the region that produces roughly 60% of the world's fishing line — and have since 2005.
The floor runs 500+ braiding machines and makes about 1,000,000 metres a day across three line categories. Owning every stage is what lets a custom spec hold: the same people who braid the line also dye, coat and spool it, so a change in one step is checked in the next. Standard orders dispatch in 7 days; trial and custom runs are scheduled with the quote. Video factory tours and on-site visits are welcome.
Step 5: Quality control on every batch
Custom line is only useful if the tenth reorder matches the first. The tolerances to ask for are diameter (ours is ±0.010 mm), measured break against the label (ours breaks 5–10% above the label rating), and length (every spool at full stated length). Every batch is pull-tested before dispatch, the first-article pass rate is 99.5%, and batch test data ships with the goods.
Because of the number of sizes we do not hold a material test report for every SKU. If your market requires one, we arrange third-party lab testing for that order.
Step 6: Packaging and private label
There are two routes. Bulk spool packaging is a film-wrapped spool with your custom label sticker, available from a single spool. Private label packaging is retail-ready packaging matched to the line type and length — box packaging for braid, leader packs for fluorocarbon — from 100 pieces per SKU.
With logo stickers or spool labels, 100 pieces per SKU gets your name on real product. Custom printed boxes are also possible at 100 pieces, with a one-time USD 200 print setup because the printer has its own minimum. Logo and label design can be done in-house. Your artwork stays yours: it is reproduced only for your order and we claim no right in your brand.
Step 7: DDP delivery and reorders
Shipping is DDP door-to-door: duties are handled by us and included in the invoice, so the quoted price is the landed price. Air freight to the US typically takes 7–12 days. After launch, reorder the SKUs that sell, batch-tested to the same spec, and add sizes as the line proves itself.
The whole process at a glance
Here is what each side brings to a custom fishing line order.
| Step | What you provide | What you get |
|---|
| 1. Spec | Your waters, target fish, price point, line category and sizes | A recommended spec: construction, weave density, coating, diameters, colors |
| 2. Sample | Where to ship | A free 150 m Pro Grade X8 sample spool from US stock |
| 3. Quote | Volumes per SKU and packaging route | A written quote against your spec |
| 4. Production | Approval of spec and artwork | Fiber spinning, braiding, dyeing, coating and spooling on one floor |
| 5. Quality control | Nothing | Batch pull tests; batch test data shipped with the goods |
| 6. Packaging | Logo and artwork (or a brief for our in-house design) | Labelled spools or printed retail boxes |
| 7. Delivery | Delivery address | DDP door-to-door, duties included in the invoice |
The fastest projects are the ones where the buyer brings a clear market and a sample of what they sell today. The spec can then be built around a real customer instead of a guess.
FAQ: custom fishing line manufacturing
The questions brands ask before ordering a custom or private-label line.
What is the minimum order for private label fishing line?
100 pieces per SKU with logo stickers or spool labels. Custom printed boxes are also possible at 100 pieces, with a one-time USD 200 print setup. Bulk spools with a custom label sticker start from a single spool.
Can you make a line to my own spec instead of a catalogue item?
Yes. Tell us your waters and your customers' target fish and we help spec construction, weave density, coating, sizes and colors to fit that market.
How do I test the line before ordering?
Ask for the free 150 m Pro Grade X8 sample spool, shipped from US stock. Fish it, cut it and test it against what you sell today.
Do you make the line yourselves or source it?
We make it. Fiber spinning, braiding, dyeing, coating and spooling are all in-house in Dongyang, Zhejiang, since 2005. Video factory tours and on-site visits are welcome.
How long does delivery to the US take?
Standard orders dispatch in 7 days; trial and custom runs are scheduled with the quote. Air freight to the US typically takes 7–12 days, shipped DDP with duties included.
Who owns the brand and artwork?
You do. We reproduce your logos and artwork solely for your order and claim no right in your brand.
Start with a sample, not a purchase order
The lowest-risk way to start a custom fishing line is to test the line first. Tell us the category, sizes and market you have in mind, and we will ship a free sample spool from US stock and follow up with a written quote for a trial run. See the private label program for tackle brands, or compare packaging routes.
